After several years of teaching financial literacy to families in Champaign, Scott Olthoff joined Chesser Financial as a financial representative in 2011. Scott believes there is more opportunity to serve his clients by helping them avoid the losses (taxes, fees etc.) than by picking winners.
Scott grew up in a farming community in northeast Illinois and first came to the Champaign area in 1994 to work on his master’s degree at the University of Illinois.
Scott and his wife, Susan, have been married for more than twenty-five years. They have a recent college graduate daughter. Parenting has led Scott to another passion, coaching basketball, which he enjoys doing these days at Edison Middle School in Champaign. He is also a self-proclaimed weather geek (has a degree in Meteorology) as well as a child ambassador for World Vision, running marathons all over the country (and Africa) in order to raise money to support children in under-developed parts of the world.
Even though Scott has always been self-motivated (he had his own farmer’s market when he was seventeen years old), he admits that he and Susan spent the first eight years of their marriage struggling financially. Scott recognizes the existence of a financial knowledge gap in this country, and he hopes to help others overcome it and get on the road to financial security.
